The S3 German course is currently being revised to take into account the principles of a Curriculum for Excellence. As is the case with the S1 and S2 course, Literacy, Numeracy and Health and Wellbeing are embedded into the S3 course. This enables teachers to ensure that the standards and expectations laid out in a Curriculum for Excellence are rigorously applied.
Pupils continue to develop confidence in the skills of reading, listening, talking and writing.
Pupils begin to look in more detail at the German language and will be encouraged to manipulate the language to express their own opinions and interests. The differentiated Logo 4 textbook is one resource amongst many which are used to support and consolidate learning in class.
The course is divided up into three main themes:
Theme 7 – Relationships and Lifestyle
Theme 8 – Education and Learning
Theme 9 – Money and Employment
By the end of S3, pupils will have had access to Level 4 Modern Languages Experiences and Outcome. These experiences and outcomes can be accessed by clicking on the following link:
At the end of the year, pupils will aim to complete the Added Value Unit which goes towards their National 4 qualification. This will require pupils to research a topic that interests them. They will then make a presentation in the foreign language and answer follow-up questions.
As in S1 and S2, pupils will keep a “passport”, which holds all of their writing assessments and marks for all reading, listening, talking and writing tests completed. As well as the teacher commenting on pupils’ performance in tests, pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning by assessing their own work and that of their peers. It is hoped that this will enable them to become successful learners and help them to prepare for their next steps and targets. At the end of the Broad General Education in S3, pupils will have an accurate record of their work to-date.
